In many cases, we just need to bide our time to break through the limit. Elder Ying had devoted herself to the Yings'Autotech techniques for half of her life, but still hadn't got the chance to progress. No one knew the Yings'Autotech techniques better than her in the Phantom World. So she knew better than others about the defects of the techniques.
Yings's Autotech techniques pursue absolute lethality, so the mechanic automatons and weapons they produce are extremely destructive. However, this destructive power rely on nature. Its maximum potential can only be realized if the user can make good use of it. And only a powerful user can make full use the deadly Yings'Autotech techniques.
As for how to use these techniques to improve the user's power, Elder Ying didn't find the answer even though she had been studying it for ages. Things changed when she was invited to attend the Heavenly Book Convention at Mount Tianling. Elder Ying knew that this was going to be a good chance for her to make a breakthrough in Yings'Autotech techniques.
What happened at Mount Tianling remains a mystery, and elder Ying has disappeared with it. No one knows her whereabouts, but it's certain that she is still alive. Moreover, she's been watching the movement of the family until its demise.

There are many speculations about the Ying Clan's fall. Whatever reason they start with, in the end, they have to wrap up with the recognized fact.
The fact was that the Royal Court had the entire clan executed, because it suspected conspiracy. From the founding to the fall, the Ying Clan never tried to meddle with affairs of the Wulin. Their sole purpose was to make blueprints for the Empire. You know who's the immediate scapegoat when the Empire's machinery tried to start rebellion. Gone were the glory and prestige, as if never existed. The clan was toppled so thoroughly, that every known member of it was dead, including the matron's daughter Ying Miao.
The matron herself had retired from the front stage years ago when it happened. All she could do was to watch her extensive clan crumbling into dust overnight. News came that Ceramy, Ying Miao's daughter, was still alive. The matron was momentarily relieved from despair and rage. She wanted revenge, to reinstate the Yings.

The matron found Ceramy, the sole survivor in the clan's demise.
She taught her well, with every single thing she knew about Autotech. But along with knowledge, she also instilled in Ceramy a hate for the power that be, and a passion to revive the Ying Clan.
No, there should be a better word, for the matron wanted the clan to exceed the best of its former self. She investigated the machine revolt, and found a devastating source of power in those rampant machines. If she could contain that power, the Yings could easily command the whole world. There would be no power above theirs.
